Whole School History Overview

Our History Curriculum

At Edgebury, the children study three historical units. These units are supported by the Kapow scheme of work. Each term, the curriculum is underpinned by a key enquiry question. For example, ‘How am I making History?’ Lessons are interactive and discussion based. Children regularly have the opportunity to explore historical artefacts, including primary and secondary sources. Pupils learn the skills needed to be a discerning historian and they learn how to piece clues together to form an opinion about a certain topic area.

Where possible, meaningful links are made across other curriculum areas such as Geography which may complement the children's understanding of a unit. Pupils are also encouraged to build on their previous learning in history so that units are revisited and pupils can draw links between historical periods.

Educational visits and workshops are an integral part of our curriculum offer. This often forms a visit or trip linked to the theme or a visitor or workshop delivered in school. These activities allow children the opportunity to have real life experiences linked to their theme. Some of the enrichment activities the children have enjoyed have included visits to the London Eye, Greenwich observatory, Chislehurst Caves, Hever Castle, National Gallery, Godstone Farm, Margate seaside and interactive workshops such as WW2 evacuees and chocolate making.
